Build a Web Site
By this stage of the process you are developing your ideas and thinking about how to tell the internet world about your product, service, or important or interesting information.
It is now time to build a web site. This is the stage when I hear "I can't build a site; I am not a computer person". Well neither was I when I started and I still do not consider myself a web site builder since I do not know the html language of true web masters. Luckily, with the use of templates you just need to know how to type to make a professional looking web site. By building your own site you not only save thousands of dollars by not paying a web master, but you also have the power and flexiblity of making changes at any time to add content, make updates or tweak the site to improve search engine rankings.
There are many choices out there in terms of choosing a hosting company. Some key considerations are price, uptime guarantee, template library, bandwidth, support and how many domains can be hosted on the account. I will address each separately below. Also, please note the banner on the bottom of this page for a hosting company that meets the criteria (click for more information).
If you want to build a web site using easy to use templates without committing to a hosting company click the Bravenet link at the bottom of the page. You can sign up for a free account and have a site supported with advertising. Once you decide you like to remove the ads you can go with a paid hosting plan at low monthly rates. This is a good way to try it before you like it without paying.
I try to find a hosting service that will bill me monthly or annually for around $10.00 a month. Many hosting companies fall into this price target including the ones at the bottom of this page.
.If your hosting company is down, no one is going to see your site. Most reliable hosting companies have back up servers to host your site in case of hackers attacking the sites (not uncommon) and have back up power for power outages. I choose hosting companies with a 95% and greater uptime guarantee.
Many hosting companies provide free templates on a variety of themes in order to build your site. You can also purchase your own software from another source and only use a hosting company for hosting. In considering the use of templates check them out before purchasing a hosting package. Host Gator has over 4500 templates to use. Click the banner at the bottom of the page to see them.
Some hosts offer unlimited bandwidth and others have limits. Bandwidth relates to site traffic. The more traffic the more bandwitdh you are consuming. If you choose a host with limited bandwidth and your site generates a lot of traffic you may pay extra for more bandwidth. Of course, if this happens you can always move your site to an unlimited bandwith host. Having too much traffic is not a problem of course. It means you are doing great.
The problem with support is that you really do not have a gauge on support performance until you need it. All hosting companies brag about their support. Just realize if you have a problem you are not their only custome, and therefore, cannot expect their undivided attention. Some hosting companies have support forums where you can check on others who have shared your problem and the results to fix the problem are shown. Others have an online chat room where live support answers your questions.
For the price I mentioned above - around $10.00/ month - I expect the hosting company to host more that one web site. Even if you are thinking of only one site at this time, give yourself the flexibility of creating and hosting additional sites in the future. When you register for a multi-site hosting account, you sign up with your primary site www.myfirstsite.com. Additional sites are hosted as "add on domains" under the www.myfirstsite.com account. You simply go into the control panel where you are given a click the add on domain category, and then you add www.mysecondsite.com. You will pick a user name and password for the new site to publish it.
