In most cases we have used or own the products we sell which gives us greater credibility than typical internet stores. People like to purchase from vendors who use the product so we suggest you purchase a product prior to marketing the product. We also pick products that we can feature on a web site, sell using PayPal, then order from the manufacturer to have it drop shipped to the customer. This eliminates the need to have an inventory which can be expensive to purchase and store. It also eliminates the hastle of shipping and handling.
Another thing we have done is create informational sites. For example, we have sites about yurts (we have them at the inn), a yurt lodging directory, vegetarian inn directory, and green cleaners web site. Such sites create Google Adsense income and book sales through Amazon.com.
As a consultant I had a consulting web site where people could purchase information online via paypal and after payment be directed to a file containing the information they purchased. Some people create an ebook for this purpose as well.
In conclusion, pick an idea, topic or product that you are familiar with and have a passion for.
