Improve Site Ranking
A major goal in building your site is ranking high on Google and other search engines to generate the most traffic which may result in more Adsense revenue and product sales. This site will not try to cover all the bases since SEO or "search engine optimization" is a specialty that is thoroughly discussed on many sites. I will mention some of the simple things to do I have learned over the years.

Can't Figure Google Out?

Google frequently changes their criteria for ranking sites. They have an algorithm that is closely guarded in terms of how it works. One moment you might be on page one and the next week you slipped to page twenty. You can read articles online from SEO consultants who will give you Google's latest theories and methodology.

Use the following time tested ideas to help improve your ranking.

KeyWord Rich Domain Name- Choose a good domain name. Also, after you have concluded that you wish to pursue this venture, sign up or renew the domain for multiple years (2 or more). I have heard that search engines sometimes check ownership of the domain name and how long it is valid to insure that the site represents a long-term versus short-term interest.

Relevant Links- Link to sites that are relevant to your topic or product through a reciprocal link with that site.

Keywords on Home Page- Use relevant keywords on your home page but do not overdo it. That is called "keyword spamming" and you could be penalized or banned.

Quick Loading- Make sure your pages load quickly. Large photos on the home page will slow down loading which can hurt ranking.

Content Rich Site- Not only sell a product, but provide lots of valuable information and resources. Search engines love content. Also add Youtube videos on our product or topic to make it more interesting and engaging. A great book on this topic is "You Tube for Businesses" by Michael Miller (shown below at bottom of page).

Paid Directories- Get listed on relevant paid directories with high rankings on the web.

Blog- Set up a blog that ties to your site and blog frequently about new products, topics, etc. The new blog entries are seen as fresh new content which search engines like. Google has a good free blog program. You can also create a video blog. Information is in the You Tube book shown below.

Chatroom/Forum- Add a forum so visitors to your site may suggest new content and ideas. This would work great on an informational site about "Southern Novels" where guests could suggest their favorite books. Bravenet (see banner below) has a free forum program you can add to your site.

Social Marketing- Also known as relationship marketing social marketing as been shown to increase web site substantially over a period of time. Traditional marketing pushes consumers towards a product or service versus social marketing pulls the customer in through building relationships. There are several popular social marketing sites you may use including Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Linkedin. All provide a gateway to your web site and increase traffic. You can also install referral buttons on your site like Stumbleon and Delicious or have a Friendfeed. Our bed and breakfast inn twitter site can be reached with the Twitter button  located above left column and Facebook http://www.georgiamountaininn.com/fb.htm. You can also see our "share" button on the top left which also increases site traffic for referrals as well.
